Rolfing ®

Rolfing - Structural Integration (SI) is a system of soft-tissue manipulation, movement and awareness education which organizes the whole body in gravity. It was developed by the American biochemist Ida P. Rolf, PhD (1896-1979). She called it “Structural Integration” and it was later nicknamed “Rolfing” after her name. Her scientific research in biochemistry as well as her studies of other manipulative techniques helped her to develop Structural Integration. Her main insight was in emphasizing the importance of re-establishing the natural alignment of the different segments of the body with the force of gravity in order to improve the body’s vitality and well-being.

Rolfing effectsSI re-aligns the body by lengthening and freeing up the tight areas present in the myofascial layers (‘wrapping’ type of connective tissues which surrounds the muscles) and by integrating structurally and functionally the part of our bodies that feel out of place. It also improves the natural posture by encouraging a core support to emerge and by increasing the conscious awareness of the way we use our bodies.

It is through a series of sessions – the “10 Series” - that Rolfing works best with long lasting results. The series create a continuous process of change and unfolding, each treatment continuing the work that was accomplished in the treatment before. The different sessions cover most of the areas of the body, from the rib cage to the legs, from the feet to the head, from front to back, from sides to sides and from superficial to deep. Preferably sessions are received one to four week(s) apart. If you are not sure you want to go through the whole series, you can always try either the first session or the first three sessions. Not only they will give you a good indication of what Rolfing feels like but also there is a great chance that you would feel the benefits of the work right away.

Rolfing can change the body structurally as well as functionally and can improve one’s own awareness of it, creating the possibility to affect the whole being.

Rolfing® is a service mark of The Rolf Institute® of structural integration.
